Bring me sunshine

Eric Morecambe has been bringing sunshine to millions since the first time that he appeared on screen as part of Morecambe and Wise. He’s undoubtedly the best known man to come out of the small seaside town which bears his name. It’s a not very well known fact that he was born John Eric Bartholomew, to a Morecambe based couple called Sadie and George. Sadie was particularly driven to see her son succeed in entertaining people, taking a job as a waitress so that Eric could attend dance classes. Her faith in his talent was rewarded as he won several competitions, one of which would bring him together with Ernest ‘Ernie’ Wise.

The pair performed together a little during the war, but war service was a priority, and so Eric joined the Merchant Navy. He and Ernie didn’t have much contact until 1946, meeting again by chance while performing in Swansea. The two joined forces, and were an inseparable and incomparable double act from then until Eric’s early death.

The two of them performed in many television shows, but never forgot their roots in music hall, both in terms of their performances and the fact that they brought a old friend from those days into the cast.

Eric was posthumously voted to be the funniest person in the twentieth century, and Morecambe and Wise the duo were named as the fourth best comedy pair, by comedians in 2005.

If this article has sparked some interest, or you are already a fan of Morecambe and Wise, then you might want to come to his hometown. The place to stay in Morecambe is the Silverwell Hotel.
